Valley section

1. St. Pölten

St. Pölten is the departure point for a trip on the Mariazell Railway. It is the oldest city in Austria and also the youngest regional capital. Baroque and art nouveau architecture are to the fore in the city centre, while contemporary buildings predominate in the government quarter and cultural district. There are numerous restaurants and cafés in which to linger awhile in the city centre.

3. Ober-Grafendorf

At this station you will find a heritage boiler house. The original restored vehicles include the legendary Mh.6 steam locomotive (year of manufacture 1908). There are boiler house tours from 1st May until 26th October on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 1 pm to 5 pm.

4. Klangen Art Railway Station

Here the visitor can experience art. At Klangen station there is an art gallery, art workshops and a sculpture park. From here it's possible to explore the surrounding area by bike on the Pielach Valley cycle trail.

5. Weinburg

One of the most cutting-edge therapeutic climbing centres in Austria is just a few minutes' walk from the station.

Pielachtaler Sehnsucht is a naturally landscaped bathing lake with several beaches, sunbathing areas, a volleyball court and playgrounds.

7. Rabenstein an der Pielach

Here you can visit "Greenhorn Hill" western village, the Rabenstein ruin and the baptistry of Cardinal Franz König.

8. Steinschal-Tradigist

9. Kirchberg an der Pielach

Right by the station is the Mariazell Model Railway Museum. It shows the 30-km mountain section with 16 tunnels, 9 viaducts and 7 bridges. Please note: this museum is currently closed and will reopen in May 2019.

The station is the starting point for the Kirchberg Dirndl tour, which takes in the most interesting sights in the village including the skywalk.

10. Frankenfels

Here you can enjoy the Nix cave, tours through the Taubenbach ravine, the Hausstein mountain farming museum and the Nature Hotel Steinschaler Doerfl.

11. Laubenbachmühle

The heart of the Mariazell Railway: the Laubenbachmühle operations centre. Here a station, operations centre, workshops, tourism portal and bistro shop are combined. You can take a fascinating tour of the operations centre.

12. Winterbach

13. Puchenstuben

The pleasant "Ötschis Bahnorama" noddy train runs from the station to the Sulzbichl and Erlaufboden entrances to the Ötscher-Tormäuer Nature Park.

14. Gösing

In Gösing is the perfect starting point for hikes in the Ötschergräben. The Ötscher view here is one of the most beautiful in the entire region.

15. Annaberg-Reith

This is the ideal starting point for hikes on the Via Sacra and in the Hintere Tormäuer. www.annaberg.info

16. Wienerbruck-Josefsberg

At the base of the Ötscher is the Nature Park centre with a restaurant, shop and information centre.

17. Erlaufklause

This is a good starting point for a hike through the Ötschergräben gorge to Wienerbruck.

18. Mitterbach / Gemeindealpe

The Gemeindealpe Mitterbach ski resort offers mountain experiences just 500 m from the station – in summer as well as in winter. Two modern chair lifts whisk you in comfort and safety to the peak of the 1,626-m-high Gemeindealpe. At the top there is a stunning panoramic view from one of the most popular mountains in the foothills of the Alps. In winter the resort offers a snow park, a speed run with timekeeping, a freeride area and two signposted touring routes. In summer visitors can race downhill on mountain carts. The 800 m panoramic circular hiking tour starts alongside the Terzerhaus lodge.
